The Challenge: Separating Organizations Without Disrupting Collaboration
When two organizations separate, their shared collaboration platform must be carefully divided. Teams need to retain the channels, collaboration history, workflows, and integrations relevant to their operations while establishing independent workspace environments.
In this engagement, two organizations needed to separate their collaboration environment. The source Slack workspace contained more than 300 users, but only a selected group of 80+ users and 400 channels needed to move into the destination Slack Business+ workspace.
The challenge extended beyond migrating users and messages. The transition also involved Slack Connect relationships, workflow dependencies, custom applications, channel administration, and the preparation of the destination workspace.
A blanket migration would not have addressed the need to separate the environments selectively.
The objective was to migrate the right people and collaboration resources while helping the transitioning organization establish an independent, operational Slack workspace.
The Solution: A Structured, Selective Slack Migration
Implementology delivered a 5 week engagement covering selective data migration, Slack Connect reconnections, workflow and custom app migration, and destination workspace configuration.
1. Selective User and Channel Migration
We planned and executed the migration around the agreed user population and channel scope rather than duplicating the entire source workspace.
Our work included:
Migrating 60+ selected users from a source workspace containing 300+ users.
Migrating 400 selected public and private channels.
Migrating users DMs and Group DMs
Transferring available collaboration data within the source workspace's two-year retention period.
Maintaining clear migration boundaries aligned with the organizational separation.
This approach helped ensure the migration was driven by business requirements rather than the size of the source environment.
2. Slack Connect Reconnection Support
External collaboration is often one of the most overlooked aspects of a Slack migration. Slack Connect channels allow organizations to collaborate with customers, partners, and other external teams, and these relationships may require additional coordination after a workspace transition.
Implementology provided full support for Slack Connect reconnections as part of the engagement, helping coordinate the restoration of external collaboration relationships in the destination environment.
This work addressed an important part of the transition: ensuring that the workspace separation accounted for collaboration beyond the organization's internal channels.
3. Workflow Migration and Custom App Relocation
Moving channel history alone does not recreate the operational experience users depend on every day. Workflows and integrations may power notifications, approvals, automations, and other business processes.
As part of the engagement, Implementology migrated:
Approximately 20 Slack workflows.
Three custom Slack apps.
We also accounted for dependencies on channels and other workspace-specific resources. Workflows connected to private channels, Canvas, Lists, or other resources may require their owners to re-establish connections and permissions in the destination workspace.
4. Custom Emoji Migration
Custom emojis are a small but meaningful part of the Slack experience. They often become embedded in team culture and everyday communication.
We included 491 custom emojis in the migration scope, helping preserve familiar elements of the team's collaboration experience.
5. Channel Archiving and Channel Manager Configuration
A successful spin-off also requires a clean and manageable workspace after migration.
Implementology supported the archiving of legacy channels and the assignment of channel managers, helping establish clearer channel ownership and administrative responsibilities.
These activities formed part of the broader effort to prepare the destination environment for ongoing independent operation.
6. Canvas and Lists Migration Coordination
Slack Canvas and Lists can contain important documentation, operational information, and task tracking.
For this engagement, the client elected to handle its Canvas and Lists migration independently. Implementology coordinated the broader migration scope around this decision, keeping responsibilities clear and avoiding duplication of effort.
7. Destination Workspace Readiness
Throughout the engagement, we considered the configuration and operational requirements of the destination Slack Business+ workspace.
The objective was not simply to transfer data, but to support an environment where users could continue working, workflows could be reconnected where necessary, and external collaboration relationships could be restored.
The Results: A Migration Built Around Business Requirements
The engagement delivered a selective Slack migration designed to support organizational independence without unnecessarily duplicating the entire source workspace.
Key project figures:
400 selected channels migrated.
80+ users included in the migration scope.
Approximately 20 workflows migrated.
3 custom apps migrated.
491 custom emojis included in the migration.
Full Slack Connect reconnection support included in the engagement.
Channel archiving and channel manager configuration supported as part of the transition.
The client retained ownership of the Canvas and Lists migration, while Implementology focused on the agreed data migration, workflow and application migration, Slack Connect reconnections, and workspace configuration requirements.
Why This Project Matters
Slack spin-offs are more complex than straightforward workspace migrations. They require careful decisions about what data moves, which users need access, how workflows depend on workspace resources, and how external collaboration will continue after the transition.
This engagement demonstrates Implementology's approach to complex Slack migrations: combining technical execution with scope definition, dependency management, collaboration continuity, and post-migration workspace configuration.
Whether you're separating a business unit, establishing an independent environment after an acquisition, or restructuring shared collaboration spaces, a carefully planned migration can help you manage the transition with greater clarity and control.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Slack channels be selectively migrated during a spin-off?
Yes. A migration can be planned around selected users and channels rather than the entire source workspace. Available options depend on the migration method, workspace configuration, and agreed scope.
Can Slack Connect channels be reconnected after a migration?
Slack Connect relationships may need to be re-established after a workspace migration. The process depends on the participating organizations, workspace configurations, and available permissions.
Can Slack workflows and custom apps be migrated?
Workflows and custom apps can be included in a migration plan, but dependencies, permissions, integrations, and workspace-specific connections must be assessed. Some components may require reconnection, reconfiguration, or recreation rather than a direct transfer.
Does a Slack migration automatically include Canvas, Lists, and direct messages?
No. Coverage depends on the migration method and agreed scope. Canvas, Lists, and direct messages may require separate handling or may be excluded from a particular engagement. These boundaries should be established before migration begins.
How much effort does a selective Slack migration require?
Effort depends on the number of users and channels, data requirements, workflows, custom applications, Slack Connect relationships, and destination configuration.
